Since 2023, systems are rated with SEER2, which is tested under higher static pressure to better reflect real ductwork. A SEER2 number runs slightly lower than the old SEER number for the same equipment — so compare SEER2 to SEER2, never across the two.
Older units still running in Arizona homes are often 8–10 SEER. New systems in the hot-dry region start around 14–15 SEER2, and high-efficiency variable-speed equipment reaches the low 20s. ENERGY STAR certified central AC sits above the federal minimum.
